I came across CrossFit while walking through a race expo in Atlanta, Georgia. I grew up being pushed around by brothers, playing sports and I am now a passionate endurance athlete. I usually find myself in situations that leave me sweaty, sore, muddy, bloody, and sometimes even lost. CrossFit makes me better at all of those things whether it is during a marathon, ultra, triathlon, adventure race or one of our WOD’s. I constantly see the value and benefits in strength and conditioning through functional and constantly varied exercises. Even better- I met a community of inspiring people. I love CrossFit. I am so excited to be doing what I love.

I started out training at your typical, run of the mill “Globo Gym”. I wanted to get “HUGE”, but by chance found Kettlebells in 2006 and realized that “HUGE” was more like fat and out of shape. I trained hard and saw dramatic changes in my physique. My mindset changed. I was more interested in achieving athletic potential and functionality.

I completed the Russian Kettlebell Challenge that year but more importantly I met Doug Chapman, owner of HyperfitUSA. He introduced me to CrossFit and it’s methodology. I was hooked. When I got home I took my kettlebells and did all the CrossFit WOD’s with them. Damn! I was still out of shape. A fire was lit. I needed to know more.

CrossFit is how I train. I delve everything into learning and becoming a better trainer.

My initial exposure to CrossFit was to do as many burpees as I could in 60 seconds. After years of trying almost every workout program on the market, I soon realized that it all paled in comparison to what I just put myself through. That’s when the realization came that I had much to overcome. Putting the ego aside, I began combing the pages of the CrossFit “main site” to learn more movements. Since, I’ve reaped the benefit in most every facet of fitness: from the WODs, mobility, nutrition, and increased safety in my profession as a firefighter, I am able to enjoy life more fully. My goal is continue down the path of “elite fitness” and to coach others along the way to see the results as I have, no matter your physical fitness level. The scalability of the programming affords every person the potential to reach new levels of fitness. I urge everyone to become part of this vibrant community that is at the root of CrossFit Annapolis!

I’ve been had. I’ve been took. I’ve been HOODWINKED, BAMBOOZLED, LED ASTRAY, RUN AMOK! How’d I end up here?!?! To be honest, I knew nothing of CrossFit, let alone had any intentions of joining CrossFit. I stumbled upon CrossFit after I moved to Sacramento, CA and was trying to build my chiropractic practice by marketing to their gym. Unbeknowst to me, as I was trying to market to the owner, he proceeded to flip the script and tell me about the philosophy behind CrossFit – constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements; and it peaked my curiosity. Although I remained a skeptic, I was interested in giving it a try and then I was faced with the FILTHY FIFTIES for my first workout; I swore this gym was trying to kill me! CrossFit was a changing point for me, in terms of exercise and my life. After that “workout”, I woke up the next day sore as all hell, couldn’t move and wanting more – why I wanted more I will never know. SIGN ME UP!!! But I was locked in to some absurd amount of personal training sessions at a “globo gym”, so I altered my training schedule to 3 times a week so I would breeze through my training sessions so I could get into a box as soon as possible. Starting in December of 09, my unhealthy addiction began. What I didn’t realize that when I joined that my passion for exercising would return, that exercising doesn’t have to feel like a chore – I had lost that passion after I quit playing lacrosse and competitive swimming – YES, black people can swim and play lacrosse! And as you can say the rest of it is history. I believe wholeheartedly in CrossFit methodology as way of achieving a level of health and fitness that is not widely seen in American culture; I even go as far as to have some of my practice members do some of the fundamental movements in my office! This IS what our bodies were designed to do, EMBRACE IT – Resistance is futile.

I have been an athlete all my life. Playing basketball, softball and receiving my Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do instilled in me a constant drive for competition and self-improvement. Once college ended and I no longer was part of a team, I found myself at the typical “globo gym” doing hours of cardio and standard weight training. I than discovered long distance running and 7 months later ran my first marathon. Still, I wanted something more. Being a personal trainer and athlete, I thought I knew what fitness was. But than I discovered CrossFit. After doing tabata air squats as my first WOD (and not being able to walk for a week…) I knew there was something to this. I was hooked and had to learn more!! CrossFit has instilled a new drive and passion in me. It allows every individual to conquer things they never dream imaginable. It makes the impossible possible, and even plausible. CrossFit has made me a better coach, athlete, and person.

After finding CrossFit in 2006 and peeling myself off of the floor after doing my first workout “Fran”, I immediately began incorporating it into my lifting program. Soon after, I realized fully adopting CrossFit and its concepts into my everyday life, as my sole fitness regimen, was a necessity. CrossFit has not only improved my overall health, both physically and psychologically, it has additionally helped to prepare me in all obstacles I am faced with while performing my military duties. Over the past 6 years I have been provided with the opportunity to develop 2 military fitness programs, with CrossFit as the main focus. From these experiences I have been exposed to the results it has provided to those in need of a fitness program that truly prepares for the “unknown”. I believe that intensity coupled with functional movements, incorporated into smart programming allows everyone from all walks of life to reap incredible benefits that CrossFit has to offer. CrossFit has become a hobby and passion of mine, and I enjoy training others and making it a passion of theirs as well.

I started my athletic career at young age, playing lacrosse and soccer. After playing
lacrosse in college, I was unable to find the comradery, intensity and teamwork in
the local gyms that I had been accustomed to and never found myself reaching the
goals I had set for myself. After years of lifting in the globo gyms I was eager to find
something that would push my limits and raise the intensity. Then came Crossfit. I
heard about Crossfit online and quickly signed myself up for a one-on-one. After the
first session I was hooked. I knew right away that Crossfit is what I needed to reach
my goals and take me to the next level of fitness. Crossfit has been a life changing
experience. ”The only easy day was yesterday.”

I used to think that being strong meant going to the gym and doing bicep curls. After seeing a video of Dave Lipson crushing the Crossfit total I thought maybe it was time to try something new. So I checked out a free intro class and realized how intensely weak I really was when I caught myself being permanently fixated to the mat in the official Crossfit recovery position afterwards. I was hooked and It’s been a nonstop journey ever since. I have a real passion in seeing people getting stronger, faster and healthier and learning the Crossfit methodology has given me the knowledge in helping others achieve their goals. Let’s get strong!!

Dan_CFAAfter finishing my college basketball career my personal fitness and general discipline plummeted. I drifted into an abyss of inconsistent exercise and nutritional habits that lead to general lack of ownership for my well being. I ballooned to a whooping 290lbs and needed to find a community and regiment to take back control of his life (and step it up to match my smoking hot wife!). I walked into CFA and have never looked back. I felt passion oozing from the awesome and knowledgeable staff as well as inspiration from CFA’s strong and supportive athletes.

I love the community that CFA has established and my goal is to help each athlete conquer their goals. The simplicity and challenge of crossfit to “do the common, uncommonly well” has kept me coming back since. I love seeing our athletes get better each and every day and conquering their goals.

Gabe

Coach

Dan_CFAGabe first got involved in CrossFit as a 240lb powerlifter who needed to get functionally reset. Gabe had finished playing college hockey and and had begun powerlifting as a way to stay involved in a competitive pursuit. Huge squat, deadlift and bench numbers are great, but when you can’t climb the stairs without losing your breath they’re worthless. After deciding to get functionally fit to join the Marine Corps in 2006, Gabe wandered in to Crossfit NYC and hasn’t looked back.

Gabe has always believed that form is the bedrock of function, and that brilliance in the basics is the path to virtuosity.

Certifications & Accomplishments:

  • CrossFit Level I Instructor/Trainer
  • AFFA certified personal trainer 1999
  • Marine Corps Combat Conditioning Instructor

ryans-bio-picCrossFit has become a huge part of my life ever since I was introduced to my first workout back in 2007. I was instantly hooked for so many reasons and couldn’t wait until my next workout. I spent countless hours studying everything I could find about CrossFit’s theories of fitness, functional movements, and nutrition recommendations. CrossFit’s teachings were so different from the status quo that I began with a slight skepticism, but quickly accepted and now fully support the CrossFit teachings.

CrossFit has not only helped me correct bad movement patterns, but it has also helped encourage and educate me how and why I should eat better. It has helped me continue to see functional fitness gains without wasting countless hours in the gym with the typical weightlifting and cardio routines. The types of functional movements we do on a daily basis have reinforced good movement patterns that have surely reduced wear and tear, as well as prevent possible injury to my body. I am often involved in various types of manual labor projects that involve digging, helping people move, mixing concrete, and countless other projects that often cause injury or pain, do to repetitive poor movement patterns. In order to correct my bad movement patterns I began studying mobility.

One of my passions is learning about and teaching people how to increase or reclaim full range of motion in their joints, using various mobilizations techniques and stretches. The benefits of mobility are huge when it comes to correcting a lifetime of bad movement patterns and limiting the possibility of injury.

The number one benefit of CrossFit is the community. At CFA we have a diverse coaching staff and a one of a kind member base. Our athletes and coaches bring an energy and motivation level that you won’t find anywhere else. CrossFit makes working out fun, which makes it so much easier to consistently exercise and eat healthy. Americans are an individualistic society, but when it comes to exercising it is much easier to suffer with friends.
